Docent or Readership Course

The Swedish title docent more or less corresponds to a British reader or an American associate professor, and is a well known denomination
also for most English speaking academics. To avoid confusion, we have therefore chosen to use just that title when speaking of this particular course. The Docent course is a course in preparation for appointment as a docent at LTH, as well as a qualifying course in teaching and learning in higher education. The course addresses topics of relevance for a future docent at LTH, such as research supervision, third cycle studies (doctoral education), academic conduct, and assessment of PhD candidates.

The aim of the course is thus to prepare a future docent for the functions of a research supervisor and a faculty examiner/member of examining committees.

Course structure

The course consists of lectures, group discussions and written assignments reported individually and in groups. It includes components on the formal aspects of research supervision, the processes of research supervision, development of third cycle studies, academic conduct, development of research teams and assessment at dissertations.

Admission

To be admitted to the course, participants must have a PhD degree. In order to benefit as much as possible from the course, participants are recommended to have some postdoctoral experience of supervision and research.

Scope

The course corresponds to 3 weeks of full-time work.
